Desk supplies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but up until now they have had one thing in common: a complete disregard for the environment.  Every office needs things like staples, rulers, scissors, tape, paper clips and rubber bands and they are increasingly being made with eco-friendly materials.  Stop throwing your money at products that are a burden on the environment.

Rulers and push pins can be found that are made from 100% recycled materials, 70-90% of which is post-consumer, which means you will be reusing other people’s old supplies.  And if you are in the market for new scissors, make sure you get a pair that has a 100% recycled plastic handle.

For the heavy pencil user, go for a pencil sharpener made from 100% post-consumer plastic.  It will be better for the environment and will probably last longer than sharpeners made from traditional materials.  And instead of clear tape that is made of acetate, go for cellophane tape made from cellulose, which is an organic compound also referred to as “regenerated cellulose fibers”. 

Lastly, for those uh-oh moments when you reach for the Correction Fluid, try one that is entirely recyclable.  Some manufacturers will give you a pre-addressed envelope, so that you may return the empty bottles back to them.  They will then recycle the residual fluid and bottle.
